Our History
The First Presbyterian Church of Alexander City was organized on March 2, 1893 at the home of Robert Clinton Sandlin, its first Ruling Elder, with an initial membership of 17. For the first two years, the members worshiped in various homes, businesses and even the Courthouse. The first church building, located on what is now Court Square, was completed at a cost of approximately $2300.00 with “not a cent of debt”. The building was officially dedicated on August 4, 1895.
On Friday, June 13 th , 1902, a devastating fire swept through the downtown
commercial district. Miraculously, The First Presbyterian Church building was the only building in the business district that was not destroyed. The structure’s survival allowed it to serve as a beacon of hope and a relief center for a community that lost nearly its entire downtown infrastructure in a matter of hours. The building still exists today. After extensive renovations, it currently houses the Law Offices of Morris Haynes.
The following years were full of ups and downs. Ministers came and went, revivals were held to packed houses, Sunday attendance was “not what we would like to see”. New members were added, old members moved or passed away. Yet, the First Presbyterian Church continued to grow. By 1956, it had become evident that the current building was inadequate for the church’s needs. On September 9 th of that year a congregational meeting was held following the worship service. After lengthy conversation, a motion was made that “we build a new church”. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 10th, 1958 and the first worship service was held in the beautiful facility on January 18th, 1959.
On September 13, 1978, the first meeting of “The Seekers”, a non-denomination bible study group was held and continued to meet until 2024. As the church continued to grow, additions were needed. In 1981, additional classrooms were added in the upstairs of the education wing. In 1989, the fellowship hall was expanded and in 2007, the Narthex was constructed, creating a welcoming and gathering area.
Today, The First Presbyterian Church continues its ministry to Alexander City and the Lake Martin area. We invite you to become a part of our church family and its rich history.
